The Practice
“Members of the firm have tried cases in every Western province and in the Supreme Court of Canada.”
Dawson, Stevens & Shaigec is a law firm dedicated to the defence of all criminal and quasi-criminal charges. This includes all prosecutions under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the Income Tax Act, the Environmental Protection Act, the Employment Insurance Act and all provincial motor vehicle legislation. Representation is available at all trial and appellate court levels across Canada. Members of the firm have tried cases in every Western province and in the Supreme Court of Canada.
The firm has extended its range of practice to include the defence of individuals who face sanction from professional bodies such as the Law Society of Alberta, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and Police Disciplinary Panels. Other administrative hearings such as immigration appeals and Driver Control Board proceedings are becoming increasingly more common in our practice as certain members of the firm pursue their particular interests in these areas. The common thread in our practice remains the defence of persons facing punitive sanctions of whatever kind from either the state, or other authoritative bodies.
Our head office, located in the Anderson Dawson Building in downtown Edmonton, is the support centre for the firm’s wide-spread practice. While the Edmonton office houses our research and computer facilities, together with our professional staff of legal assistants and para-legals, branch offices in Fort McMurray, Red Deer and Westaskiwin allow us the ability to more easily practice in, and serve clients from, these other core practice areas.
Over the years, we have developed an extensive network of professionals in other fields to support our litigation requirements. These include expert witnesses in the fields of science and medicine, private investigators and translators in various languages. These specialists provide us the ability to conduct specialized defences involving such areas as alcohol absorption/elimination rates, polygraphs, computer crimes, accident reconstruction and forensic accounting.
A significant and valued part of our practice involves referrals of criminal cases from other law firms. These referrals are from firms that either do not practice criminal law, lack the resources or experience to conduct particularly complex or lengthy criminal trials, or find themselves unable to act due to a conflict of interest.
Our firm is on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week to provide legal advice on an immediate and timely basis.
