Section 525 bail reviews in relation to multiple accused.

“The Supreme Court of Canada has recently attempted to jolt us out of our complacency with respect to the pace of criminal proceedings”. Section 525 CC is a mechanism established by Parliament to ensure that trials are held within a reasonable time. Recommendations included: (1) the Crown provide timely and full disclosure; (2) the defence seek out missing disclosure; (3) “the [Edmonton Remand Centre’s] inability to meet its obligations under the Criminal Code must be addressed”; (4) priority should be given to summary conviction matters wherein there is delay; (5) defence counsel should file Designations so that they will be notified as to the date of s 525 reviews; (6) the trial coordinator should be available during s 525 reviews to provide information regarding available court dates.
